The golfing superstar salutes Sports Personality success with double accolades.

Seconds before his name was called, a trepidatious idea raced through his mind. He admitted he was thinking, "Please don't let it be a racing champion once more."

"Tonight represents a tremendous night for golf," the champion said. "Golf was recognized in such a big way, with the team winning and then with my award. It's a huge moment for golf, and perhaps we can use that."

On this occasion, however, there was no last-minute surprise. The outcome was clear, allowing a overjoyed McIlroy to reflect on a blockbuster evening for both himself and the European Ryder Cup winners, who were crowned the year's best team.

A Whirlwind Schedule

Choosing not to celebrate at the aftershow party, McIlroy was already focusing on his immediate plans. After played in a tournament in Florida and flown to the UK, he was heading straight back to the sunshine state.

"I've had a hectic 24 hours," he said. "I am anticipating a little bit of a break over Christmas."

Drive to Improve

However, McIlroy made clear he has no desire to become complacent, even after completing the set of all four majors earlier in the year. "I am confident I've got a few good years in me," he remarked.

"Further big titles, season-long rankings, international events, that's the aim. But as long as you feel like you can keep getting better and have the hunger, that's the key."

Squad Celebration

At the same time, Ryder Cup partner Tommy Fleetwood, who was on stage to accept the squad honor, also lauded golf's stellar night and his close friend's award.

"Those are the memories that will remain with us for all time so to get the fan's acknowledgment for that is amazing," he commented. "Seeing Rory receive that award, I think he is so worthy so much."

After it was noted that McIlroy was only the third player from golf to win the award in its seven-decade run, Fleetwood chuckled before adding, "Not a very popular bunch are we!"

Future Goals

Fleetwood hopes to finally win his initial major championship next year but he acknowledged McIlroy still thirsts for more success. "Provided that you want to be the greatest possible version of yourself, and you're still motivated, you'll find things to enhance," Fleetwood explained.

United Hopes

Prior to his departure, one final question arose. Being a massive Manchester United fan, he has been asked to parade his trophies at Old Trafford before. So could he be tempted to do it again after his new triumphs?

"If they quit letting in so many goals on their own pitch," McIlroy responded with a grin. "Improvements are being made. There's a little bit of positivity around."

After a truly spectacular season, it's understandable that Rory McIlroy is focusing on the positive aspects.
