The Game UN:Me: A Psychological Horror That Blends Survival Horror and Among Us Mechanics
The recent Day of the Devs digital showcase unveiled a number of intriguing upcoming titles, but one in particular has captured attention: UN:Me. Created by Historia and Shueisha Games, this solo adventure seems to blend the dread-filled setting of a Silent Hill title with the suspicion-driven heart of Among Us.
"This is a unique game where a young woman harboring several personalities within her must escape from a labyrinth of the mind," explains developer Yasukazu Kawai.
Stepping Into a Shattered Consciousness
In UN:Me, players assume the role of an unnamed female protagonist seeming to be of teenage years. Inside her exist four separate souls, each with unique fears and drives. These souls can seize control spontaneously, unleashing their innermost phobias upon her without warning.
Based on revealed gameplay, much of the narrative takes place within a eerie medical facility, while other scenes show the main character navigating a desolate chapel.
A World of Individual Horror
"What makes you fearful of? What makes you uncomfortable?" poses game director Shun Sasaki. "Heights. Small rooms. People in power. Things that seem trivial to other people can trigger something primal inside us. This game delves into that idea — anxieties that are specific to every individual."
The central mechanic revolves around controlling the persona that emerges at any given moment. However, these identities will change involuntarily during gameplay. During exploration, every persona's fears become amplified and assault the protagonist in succession. When the soul shifts, so does the particular terror the player experiences.
Unsettling Aesthetics and a Fatal Choice
At first glance, UN:Me displays striking aesthetic parallels with the Silent Hill franchise. The setting is populated by nurses all sporting the same face, with unnervingly wide grins. Figures in the waiting room have large flowers growing from their necks should be. Flowers are an ever-present theme, contrasting natural beauty with supernatural dread.
Yet, UN:Me presents a singular twist. Players must determine which of the four souls inhabiting the heroine is the "true" one. "Each of the personas claims that the body belongs to them," notes a creator. "During the game, you need to figure out who is authentic."
After a player believes a persona is an impostor, they must eliminate it. However, since each soul can lie or hide the truth, it is very easy to choose incorrectly.
"Maybe you've already destroyed the real [soul] with your own hands," the narration suggests. "The final entity standing might be a fraud. In any case, your choices are final."
UN:Me currently lacks a publicly announced launch window, but it is available to follow on platforms.
