'Our Mission Is Only Killing' - The Way Sudan's Brutal Militia Carried out a Massacre
Warning: This Story Includes Explicit Details of Executions.
Militiamen chuckle as they move on the rear of a pick-up truck, racing past a line of nine dead bodies and moving in the direction of the descending African sun.
"Observe all this accomplishment. Observe this instance of ethnic cleansing," a fighter shouts.
He beams as he turns the recording device on his own face and his companion combatants, their paramilitary insignia on display: "The victims shall all be killed in this manner."
The combatants are rejoicing over a mass killing that humanitarian officials fear resulted in the deaths of more than thousands of people in the Sudan's metropolis of the Darfur city in recent weeks.
A City Isolated from the World
After maintaining the community under encirclement for nearly two years, from the summer the RSF advanced to strengthen its dominance and restrict the surviving inhabitants.
Space-based imagery reveal that forces began to construct a massive sand wall - a raised earthen wall - surrounding the edges of the city, blocking access routes and halting relief supplies.
While the blockade escalated, multiple individuals were killed in an paramilitary strike on a mosque on September 19th, while the United Nations said 53 further were slain in aerial and heavy weapon bombardments on a displacement camp in October.
Disturbing Video Reveals Unarmed Civilians Executed
At dawn on late October the RSF overwhelmed the final military defenses and captured the primary base in the community, the headquarters of the 6th Infantry Division, as the government forces pulled back.
One of the most disturbing videos to appear and examined showed the consequences of a massacre at a campus structure on the western of the urban area, where dozens dead bodies were visible spread over the ground.
An elderly individual dressed in a robe was seated alone amongst the corpses. He looked to glance as a fighter equipped with a firearm proceeded descending the steps in the direction of the individual. lifting his rifle, the gunman fired a one round at the individual, who dropped to the ground lifeless.
"For what reason is this individual yet alive," another combatant shouted. "Kill this one."
Space-based imagery taken on October 26th seemed to confirm that killings were also conducted on the thoroughfares of the city, according to a study issued by the academic research center.
One eyewitness who spoke reported they had witnessed "multiple of our kin being massacred - they were collected in a single location and all eliminated."
Paramilitary Leaders Seek to Implement Reputation Management
In the days that ensued from the killings, RSF leader conceded that his fighters had committed "atrocities" and said the occurrences would be examined.
Part of the arrested was following a analysis detailing his killings. Carefully choreographed and edited video posted on the RSF's official social media channel show him being led into a cell at a detention facility on the outskirts of al-Fashir.
At the same time, the militia and connected digital profiles started seeking to alter the story.
Content presenting its combatants distributing aid to residents were disseminated by several users, while the paramilitary's communications team published multiple clips purporting to show the proper treatment of military detainees.
Regardless of the online effort being used by the militia, their conduct in the city have sparked worldwide condemnation.
