The city's Mayor-Elect, Zohran Mamdani, has decided to take up residence in the historic Gracie Mansion, vacating the rent-stabilised apartment that was a central issue throughout his campaign.

A Historic Residence

Dating back to 1799, Gracie Mansion has been the primary dwelling for most New York City mayors after the World War II era.

But, Mamdani, for whom rent control is a key policy, hesitated to declare he would live there promptly following his triumph in November.

"This decision rested on keeping my family safe and the imperative to focusing all of my focus on enacting the platform on affordability the city's residents supported," Mamdani said on Monday.

A Fond Farewell

He resided in the Queens borough of Astoria, an area famous for its abundance of cultural enclaves and global cuisine.

"To my neighbors in Astoria: my gratitude for demonstrating the best of New York City," Mamdani's statement said.

"While I may no longer live there, it will always live inside me and my efforts as mayor," he affirmed.

Political Debate

In his campaign, Mamdani tied his key pledge – halting rent increases – to his circumstances as a tenant.

However his opponents, most notably ex-governor Andrew Cuomo, criticised Mamdani for living in the affordable housing even though he came from a prominent family.

Previous Exceptions

Not every mayor have opted to reside at Gracie Mansion.

Michael Bloomberg, the billionaire entrepreneur, preferred to remain in his own townhouse on the Upper East Side for his time in office, which concluded in 2012.

Instead, Bloomberg argued it should be a venue for public city functions, and pushed for significant upgrades of the aging mansion.

A Stately Residence

Upon taking up residence at Gracie Mansion near his swearing-in on 1 January, he will find himself in surroundings very different than his humble Astoria digs.

With its butter yellow paint, green shutters, and pristine railings, Gracie Mansion is a wedding cake of a house with views of the East River.

Inside, the first floor of the historically styled mansion is furnished to reflect the home's historical period.

The estate, which is said to has five bedrooms, also boasts increased security measures to secure the mayor and his family.

Ghostly Tales

Past occupants have alleged that Gracie Mansion also has ghostly inhabitants.

Chirlane McCray, the spouse of previous mayor Bill De Blasio, informed the press that they experienced doors opening and closing inexplicably, and the floors emitted odd sounds.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams was more certain. "No matter what anyone says," he insisted in 2022. "The place is haunted in there, man."

The Value of Rent Stabilization

His former home is under rent control, which means the city regulates on how much property owners can increase rent each year.

City residents see such units as valuable lifelines as the price of rent rises faster than what many can afford.

It was reported Mamdani was paying approximately $2,300 each month for his apartment.

Based on data from the real estate platform Zillow, the average rent for a studio or one-bedroom in New York City is $3,500 a month.
