Forecasters have indicated a frosty start to the new year, with wintry precipitation expected throughout a lot of the UK. Revelers have been told to wrap up as sub-zero temperatures are expected for New Year's Eve.

Celebratory Events Proceed Despite Alerts

Edinburgh's iconic Hogmanay festivities are expected to proceed, following last year's calling-off. This comes despite yellow warnings for snow in northern Scotland.

"An icy New Year's Eve evening for those partying, so warmer clothes will be essential," noted the Met Office.

Fireworks Under Open but Cold Skies

Across the UK, the weather is expected to be perfect for fireworks celebrations, with a lack of precipitation and good visibility. The mercury are forecast to be cold, so extra layers a necessity, as per forecasters.

In more northern areas, conditions will be cloudier, but this is not expected to affect visibility for seeing fireworks. "We are not looking at low cloud, mist or murk, so you ought to be able to see fireworks, just not stars," commented one forecaster.

Broad Snow Warnings for New Year's Day

As we enter Friday, weather warnings have been issued for Northern Ireland and stretching from Wales, through the north-west, the West Midlands and reaching London and the majority of the south-east of England.

Temperatures Set to Fall Even More

Going into the new year, it will be "frosty everywhere where you are," commented forecaster Simon Partridge. Temperatures are set to drop further as snowfall and high winds are expected to batter the north of the country.

Approximately 10cm of snow could accumulate to have accumulated in some areas by Friday morning, potentially hitting 30cm on the most elevated routes and peaks.

Medical Warnings Issued

In addition, serious cold weather health warnings have been activated for the north-east and north-west of England. These are due to remain in place until noon on 5 January, with the mercury expected to fall to between 3C and 5C.

The health agency stated this meant the weather was likely to lead to notable consequences across health and social care services. This encompasses a likely increase in the number of deaths among vulnerable individuals or those 65 and older.
