Eric Adams to Endorse Andrew Cuomo in NYC Mayor's Election

New York City Mayor Eric Adams has announced his plan to support former Governor Cuomo in the upcoming election for mayor, despite an extended period of public tension between the pair of Democrats.

A Surprising Reversal After Previous Accusations

Only weeks ago, Adams had lashed out at the former governor, calling him a “deceptive figure and a untruthful person” and alleging of having “a history of pushing Black candidates out of races.” However, in a new development, Adams changed his position, revealing he now intends to campaign alongside Cuomo in areas where he maintains significant backing.

“It's essential to energize the communities of color that have suffered from urban displacement on how critical this election is,” the mayor remarked.

The mayor further explained, “They have watched their housing costs rise due to gentrification and they have been ignored in those areas, and I’m going to go to those communities and speak one on one with community leaders and organizations and I’m going to walk with the governor in those neighborhoods and get them involved.”

Election Landscape and Recent Events

The election battle has so far been shaped by the competition between Cuomo and progressive candidate his main rival, whose growing support has drawn interest globally and represented aspirations for a rejuvenated leftwing of the Democratic party.

During a latest mayoral debate, both the democratic socialist and GOP candidate Curtis Sliwa declared they would refuse the mayor's support if offered.

Earlier this year, the mayor had begun his re-election campaign as an unaffiliated candidate after facing federal corruption charges which were later dismissed in return for his assistance with federal immigration raids across New York City.

At an unrelated press conference on Thursday, the mayor answered journalists asking about the endorsement plan by saying, “Andrew and I will appear together this evening.”

The announcement came a day after the two politicians were seen sitting courtside together at the the NBA team's season opener at Madison Square Garden, which took place immediately following a heated mayoral debate.
