Adult Swim's Premier New Show of 2025 Secures a Substantial Renewal for Two More Seasons.
In October of last year, Adult Swim debuted a new season of its quirky hit, Smiling Friends. Yet, later that same month, the network launched a brand-new animated series with a distinctly unique vibe. Haha, You Clowns proved to be gentle and comforting, in the spirit of a cartoon version of a contemplative talk show. In an era often defined by bleakness, this show's earnestness found an audience and helped it become a breakout hit.
A Two-Season Greenlight
On December 18th, Adult Swim confirmed a big renewal: Haha, You Clowns has been renewed for two additional seasons. This gives creator Joe Cappa significant creative freedom to develop the world of the Campbell family. The series follows three respectful teenage brothers whose defining trait is their deep love for their widowed father, with Cappa portraying for all four main characters.
"I am incredibly thankful to the fans of the show who gave *Haha, You Clowns* a chance and helped it grow," said Cappa. "It's thrilling that I get to continue exploring the Campbell household for seasons to come."
Network Praise
The official statement also included commendation from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who described the series as "profoundly sincere and uniquely eerie." He thanked the fans who embraced the show and advocated for its distinctly quirky appeal.
"All of you supported this new show, rooted for it on social media, and grew it week over week so we could approve not one, but two more seasons," noted Ouweleen. "In the words: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
A Comforting Counterpoint
Upon its debut, Haha, You Clowns was hailed as "a gentle counterpart" to other adult animated fare. There’s something deeply soothing about observing this lovable family go about their daily lives.
At the time, creator Joe Cappa shared his desire to help comedy break out of its long-running sarcastic tone. He attributed this trend to the rise of certain blockbuster franchises.
“There's this level of irony that we are trapped in,” said Cappa. “The attitude is that we have to know we’re the smartest person in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for too long, and we need to laugh at something different now. Comedy has to evolve.”
Future Seasons
Given this two-season order, with Haha, You Clowns guaranteed to return, Cappa has the opportunity to be part of that change he described. Or at the very least, the renewal guarantees audiences more opportunities to bask in the warm glow of the unique Campbell clan.
The final episode of Season 1 of Haha, You Clowns will premiere on December 21st. The entire series is ready to watch on HBO Max.
